…inside a grid.
[Science vs. Romance]
Movies about robots taking over the world always freak me out. It’s scary that technology could become so advanced (says the girl who is constantly connected through every possible form of technology and always excited about anything new).
Mervin suggested that I write about robots taking over the world. After giving it some thought I realized that in a sense they are. Not robots technically, but google controls my life. It is my personal assistant; it might as well be my boyfriend. Most of my waking hours are spent on my laptop. Without electricity, work becomes impossible, our lives become seemingly useless.
The scene: As you are sitting at your desk you reach to turn on your computer. At the same time your cell phone starts vibrating on the table spilling your filled to the top cup of coffee. You grab your phone, ignoring the spill you quickly respond to a text and then turn back to your computer. You’re logged on and have 26 unread emails, 674 unread blogs in your google reader and 5 people instantly IM you because AIM automatically starts up when you log on. You tell twitter what you are doing and then continue to stay logged on for 9 hours wasting most of the day occupied with the demands of your computer.
Story of my life.
I spend 9 hours a day at work logged onto my computer and then when I get home from work I turn on my laptop and waste my evenings answering emails and chatting on AIM. All the gaps in between work and home, I am texting. My little red blackberry never shuts up. My ipod has a name (Ruby) and I feel very lost when I leave her at home. I have myspace, facebook, last.fm, flickr, good reads, twitter and 20something bloggers accounts and update all of them frequently.
Face to face interaction is slowly becoming lost. People are losing their social skills. In my office people tend to send emails rather than walking two feet to the persons office to ask a quick question. It’s a bit ridiculous. My boss sometimes sends me emails saying, “Stop by my office.” Uh, you could have called me if you really had no desire to get up.
I think the internet and I need to take a little break. I doubt that will happen though, I’m addicted. It’s alright for now, but eventually, technology will take over the world.
Just remember, although online dating is all the rage, you can’t text message break up. If you get to that point, then you really have a problem.

That had nothing to do with robot overloads taking over the nation.
How boring…

I wrote about this! Except I linked to an article in a science/tech mag. site about these thought helmets the military was developing to help guide/control battlefield soldiers and drew some sort of comparison to some Star Trek robots the concept reminded me of (my dad watched that show… not me… I swear…!).
Yours is more reasonable and easy to swallow. I think people just thought I was weird.

When you look at networking sites like Facebook, it really does make me sad. This website that is supposed to bring people together is actually doing the opposite; If you’re spying on everyone’s profiles and status messages, why would you ever need to meet up for lunch or a coffee?
I do agree with you though… I would be terribly distraught if the internet suddenly stopped working. I manage most of my life across it!
In the grand scheme of things though, I’m more scared of alien invasion than robots taking over the world. :p

I’m pretty sure every time Pete has commented on your blog he says “Just Sayin..” Quit saying that Liz, because it really starts to catch on and it WILL become an epidemic.
Also, 674 unread blogs? Tell me you’re exaggerating, PLEASE. I don’t even know what a google reader is, I don’t understand what RSS feeds are and I’ve tried to understand what they are numerous times. I even have two RSS feeds (Perez Hilton & Digg) on my igoogle but I never pay attention to them.
That’s a lot of websites to update. Although I have a lot too.
HEARTS.

Pete – That means Edward Cullen MAY have bitten my neck. Mmmm.
Mervin – Cheer up. Stop hating. Go play some video games.
Joshlos – Bloggers tend to like straight forward, super positive blogs that they can comment on. It sucks, but that’s just the way it is.
Astharis – My older cousin makes fun of me for having a facebook ALL the time. He things talking to someone online is ridiculous. He is also 35. Our generation has grown used to less face to face social interaction.
Meredith – I’m addicitng. It happens sometimes. I’ll try to stop though. Dave is worse than me. Also, right now I legit have 674 unread blog posts in my reader.

And due to a horrible virus, I have no computer for the next 2 weeks at home. I highly recommend giving it up because it’s been nice doing other things when I get home besides watch BMX videos.
